Earlier this week I attended four Tragically Hip concerts at The Phoenix – a big band in a small club, how could I pass it up? Especially considering they are my favourite band (check out my other site: hipfans.com). Last night we went to see The Dixie Chicks at the Air Canada Centre. Whereas The Hip are a rock ‘n’ roll band who’s sole purpose is to rock, The Dixie Chicks are more along the lines of a stage musical. Everything seemed way too choreographed, the limited stage banter sounded scripted (ie. “Hello (insert city name)! You are by far the best crowd of the tour! Woo!!! We’re thrilled to be here in (insert city name) tonight!), and the usual technical needs of a live show were absent from the stage. No stage monitors, no amplifiers for the guitars, no wires for any instrument. It was really odd to see a stage without any of that equipment. And another point that was somewhat unsettling was the fact that it required 10 to 12 musicians on stage to recreate the songs live.
Aside from that, the show was entertaining, and the songs sounded great. Perhaps a little too great; almost as if they were straight off the CD…
I like my live music to be live, and although this was purported to be live, and I believe it was live, it didn’t feel (a)live.
