Home Depot vs. Canadian Tire

Take care of your customers.

I own a small business and if I don’t take care of my customers, they don’t stay customers… which is why I’m amazed that customers/consumers continue to accept crap service and products. With our recent move into a new home I’ve become much more familiar with the layout of Home Depot than I thought possible. But as a former employee of Canadian Tire, and a proud “Support Canadian companies” kinda guy you’d think that I’d be spending my time and money there; but I’m not. Our local HD and CTC are only geographically separated by a kilometre, but they are light years apart in their approach to customer service.

It takes me longer to find a staff member at Canadian Tire than it does for me to go to Home Depot, park, find my item, pay and get back to the car.

There are staff around every corner in Home Depot and they all are willing to take you to what you are looking for. At CTC if you are lucky enough to find a staffer, they simply tell you, “Oh that’s in aisle 84.”

Is Canadian Tire still riding high on it’s Canadiana image? Or do we just happen to live near the best Home Depot and the worst Canadian Tire?

CHSI – Cooney

In February Leah and I purchased a new home. At our purchase date the foundation of the house was all that existed, which provided an opportunity for us to add some custom features at a lower cost than adding them after the house was complete. Chief among these features was the wiring of speakers to our patio, some internet cabling, repositioning of cable outlets, and some home security components. We contacted the builder to see if they could recommend a subcontractor to do the work for us.

CHSI was suggested as the one for the job, and accordingly I contacted Katherine and detailed the work we wanted done. She was hard to reach via cell, and rarely returned my emails. But when she did she confirmed all of the details of what we wanted, we agreed on the costs, and I gave her approval to proceed with the installation.

Over the course of the next four months CHSI did not complete any of the work the committed to doing, contrary to what Katherine was telling me every time we spoke.

As our closing date was fast approaching I contacted the builder and coincidentally Katherine from CHSI called in at the same time. The builder conferenced her in to our call and put her on the spot about our unit, and the planned installs. At that time Katherine committed to having all our work complete on July 30.

On July 31 we completed our Pre-Delivery Inspection of our new home and to our surprise (not really) CHSI had not completed any of the work requested.

Again I called the builder who in turn contacted CHSI. Katherine called me and told me that everything was done, I just couldn’t see it because it was all in the walls… Ha! This company is useless. Take heed of my words and find another custom installer.

I’m at fault for not finding another contractor when I thought that this was getting off the rails, but as none of the add ons are critical to our happiness I let it slide. But I have no idea how this company stays in business based on our experience.

Dumb kid, dumber father

Today I was at Gears having my final pre-France bike tune-up when a father and son walked in with the sons bike. The back tire was flat and looked like it took a serious hit. The father wheeled the bike to the service counter and asked the tech, “Why is the tire flat? Isn’t the bike made for tricks, and this kind of riding?”

The tech picked up the bike and gave the wheel a spin. The deformed rim was immediately apparent and the the tech politely asked what happened. The kid replied that he rode into a curb and the tire just went flat.

The father interrupted and repeatedly asked, “Isn’t this what the bike is made for? We bought it with that understanding so why did this happen????

Each time he repeated these questions he got louder.

To the credit of the staff at Gears the tech didn’t flinch and calmly explained that the bike is a trick bike, and is made for jumps, ramps, etc, etc. No wheel can take a direct hit against a square concrete curb – clearly outlined in the deformed wheel.

The father continued to insist that the bike failed, and that Gears has to fix it.

Now I understand that fathers anger, but as someone who takes great pride in his ability and willingness to complain about wrongdoings, this was not a situation where someone else was in the wrong. The kid rode his bike, full speed, into a square curb. The kid messed up. End of story. This could have been a great opportunity to teach the kid a lesson, but instead another spoiled kid learns that there are no real consequences to his actions.

The final exchange I heard was the father telling the tech to charge him for the repair and then refund him the full cost of the bike…

i-way Robbery by Rogers

Rogers gets you coming, and going. Literally.

An Early Cancellation Fee (EECF) applies if, for any reason, your service is terminated prior to the end of the service agreement. The ECF is the greater of (ii) $1100 or (iii) $220 per month remaining in the service agreement, to a maximum of 400 (plus applicable taxes), and applies on each line in the plan that is terminated.

Just one more reason I’m not getting an iPhone. :(

EDIT: It looks like Rogers has corrected a “typo” and the rates are now $100 or $20 per month.

BIG IDEA: What Does “Balanced Budget” mean to you?

To me it means there isn’t a deficit, but apparently the trustees of the Toronto Catholic District School Board think it means a $200,000 deficit.

But they are the same people who think that expenses of $107,000 each is acceptable.

The whole system sounds like a farce to me.

How about we determine the actual expenses required to be a trustee and pay for those expenses directly. On top of that provide an honorarium and a stipulation that no other expenses will be covered. The trustees are supposed to be in it for the kids so this proposal should not encounter any opposition.

I just did a quick scan of Joseph Martino’s expenses and I’m not sure why the School Board is paying for his home phone and internet; or family pack meal deals from Swiss Chalet.

Drunk Driver Crashes Into Bike Race

Car Crashes Into Bike RaceThis incredible photo was captured during a bike race in Mexico where an idiot, driving drunk, fell asleep at the wheel and drove into the riders. One rider was killed and 10 others were injured.

There’s dumb, and then there’s really dumb

…and then there’s what happened at Critical Mass last Friday. I’m 100% for the bicycle movement, and the right to protest, but this act of stupidity did nothing to garner support from residents. All it did was solidify beliefs that many people have that cyclists are a rogue class, freaks, dummies, idiots, and fools.

Eyes Toronto See The Mass

What would possess an otherwise intelligent person that riding onto the Gardiner Expressway is a smart idea?

Kanye West, TFC, Six Straight, Traffic Chaos

Last night TFC defeated DC United to run our unbeaten streak to 6 games. Also at The Ex, the Toronto Marlies defeated the Chicago Wolves to continue their playoff run. And just across the street Rihanna and Kanye were performing at The Molson Amphitheatre. Now as exciting as it is to have all of these events taking place in our fair city, having them all share a parking lot, and then deciding to try something new in managing the traffic is just stupid.

I live 6km from the venues and it took us nearly 1 hour to get home. That is unacceptable. The Toronto Police and staff of the Exhibition Grounds closed off a number of roads and were trying to direct traffic… but come on; an hour to travel 6km????

Now on a high note… we didn’t know who was playing at the Amphitheatre so we asked the two guys sitting next to us if they knew. The younger guy (in his 30s) didn’t know. His father, who bears a resemblance to Uncle Leo from Seinfeld, stood up and asked the crowd, “Does anyone know who’s playing at the Amphitheatre? Anyone?”

A couple of younger girls in the row behind us responded, “Kanye and Rihanna.”

Uncle Leo sits down and says to me, “Don’t act like I nevah told ya!”

And we laughed.

2 Transports, 5 Cars, 1 Motorcycle and 0 Police

On a weekend touted as being heavily patrolled by the police – looking for speeders, racers, dangerous drivers, etc, etc, we saw plenty of people breaking a wide variety of laws, but didn’t see a single police vehicle at any point outside of the City of Toronto.

In theory if you travel at a speed just slightly higher than the posted limit you should pass every other vehicle as they should all be travelling at or below the limit. In reality during the 265km journey from Kingston to Toronto on a long weekend, we passed a grand total of 8 vehicles – two were loaded transports going up a long hill, and the motorcycle was vintage and carrying two people, up another long hill.

Why is everyone is such a hurry? What am I missing? Slow down, take in the scenery, save fuel, save the environment…

Tardiness

If you are running late, don’t stop and get coffee. Especially if the event you are already late for requires your attendance in order to proceed. And there are a number of other people already there waiting for your arrival.

I can’t understand how many of the women (yes, it’s only the women who do this) in my cycling class don’t understand this. The class starts early on Saturday mornings, and I understand that people think they need their coffee to get the day going, but come on! The class starts at 8. Get your ass out of bed 10 minutes earlier, get your coffee and show up on time, ready to go.
