How to spend NYE?

The most over-hyped night of the year is almost upon us; and as usual we are left wondering what to do. Paying an outrageous cover for the privelege of buying over-priced drinks being “served” by snooty bartenders does not appeal to us. Dressing up to hang out with a bunch of strangers, after spending a silly amount for tickets; We’ll pass. A house party could persuade us to leave the warm and safe confines of the condo, but it’d have to be a real killer party!

In all likelihood we’ll end up over at our favourite local pub, The Galway Arms. Which is A OK with me! Spending an evening at The Galway, any evening is always a good time. It has a near perfect mix of good (sometimes great) food, friendly staff, fair prices, and interesting patrons.

Maybe we’ll see you there…

A Pony for Christmas

Christmas came a bit early to 185 Legion Road.  And I got a pony!  Not one to ride, but one delightful pony hair squares on my new Coach bag!!!!!

My sweetie surprised me with it last night, and I love it!  I’ve stroke every patch of pink suede and distressed leather, but my favourite is the pony patch.

Tonight’s surprise is the big red box. I can’t wait!

It’s A Festivus Miracle…

Actually it’s not a miracle at all, I just wanted to type Festivus in an attempt to draw more visitors to our site.

The real story is that I gave Leah one of her Christmas presents early. I won’t say what it was, I’ll leave that for Leah.

I will give you a clue:

John Fogarty wrote a song called “Centrefield” that will give you the answer.

This is not what I’m getting Leah…

although it is pretty creative.

NOT SAFE FOR WORK – depending on where you work.

It might be magnetic. And it might be machine washable.

Leah loves Christmas. She hates the wait.

I’ve been dropping little hints about what I got her for the last couple of weeks and I think she’s reached the breaking point!

Here’s a rundown of the clues I given her so far:

  • MagnetismIt might be magnetic. But I’m not sure. The sales rep mentioned it’s magnetic properties, but as I didn’t know why this was important, I didn’t pay attention. Furthermore, after doing a little research on the topic I’ve learned that it makes no difference at all. However, if the manufacturer were to make certain parts of it magnetic, they could be put to good use by people who know how to use it properly.
  • It can go in the dishwaser. Probably. But maybe only part of it. But then again, so can everything.
  • Machine WashableWhen I said dishwasher, I might have meant washing machine. As in, it’s machine washable. But neither of them are. Uh oh… that confirms that there are two gifts. But there may be more.
  • Leather isn’t magnetic, but the gift might be. Does this really clear anything up? I don’t think so. It provides the same amount of insight as this does.
  • It’s in plain sight; I’ve had it in the condo for a few weeks and you haven’t noticed. You’ve even moved it, although now that the day is getting close I might have to return it to my office for safe keeping.
  • Kitchenaid Artisan MixerYou’d never get it for yourself, but I know you want it. And it’s not a KitchenAid Artisan Mixer with Ice Cream Making attachment. :P
  • It’s got a bit of caché to it. But I guess that this is in the eye of the beholder.
  • Will It Blend? I think so. These guys have proved that just about everything will blend. OK, so maybe only one of the gifts will blend. But I wouldn’t want to see it blended.
  • Normally I get a little paranoid about gift giving, as Leah is a hard person to buy for, and she gets really excited so I don’t want to let her down. Since I’m not fretting about this, maybe I haven’t picked out any presents yet, and this thing is just a giant ruse to get her wound up.

I know that there have been more hints, but I’m drawing a blank right now. As they come to me, I’ll update this post.

Sunset Boulevard? Back on the Big Screen?

A musical based on a 1950′s film, now becoming a movie?  If the rumors are true, then Glenn Close will reprise the role of Norma Desmond in the film Sunset Boulevard, based on the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical of the same name.  Though, as of October 2006, Sunset Boulevard has not started production.

Not sure if I’m excited about this movie prospect or not.

I love the musical.  I spent hours twirling around the kitchen in Oxford, singing the songs with my girls. And I can still be found doing the same thing today, minus the girls, if I find myself home alone.  What’s not to love about at show that has characters’s declaring, “I am big. It’s the pictures that got small.”

But Glenn Close as Norma?  I’m not so sure.  I saw her on TV in South Pacific. The only thing that saved that show was Harry!

Just as Chris and I headed off to see Rent (the horribly disappointing film, not the fantastic stage production I saw twice), I’m sure I’ll try and convince him that we need to see the new Sunset Boulevard on the big screen.

Until then, it’s the original movie or dancing in the kitchen.

10 Years Ago Today…

was the “18 Hour Party” at Club Rez in Pitman Hall; It’s hard to believe that it’s been that long. The “18 Hour Party” was held to celebrate the successful completion of our first semester of university. All of our friends were invited over to Club Rez (that’s what our unit was affectionately called) for a drink, and to say our goodbyes for the Christmas break.

Following the completion of our Print exam at 9:00am, Scott and I ran from the Kerr Hall gym back to Club Rez, and got the party started. Throughout the day a constant stream of visitors stopped in to take part in this historic event. Everyone did their part to dry out Pitman Hall – drinking everything that was put on the table.

The real kicker of this story is that the next morning we were all required to be packed up and out of our rooms by noon. Not an easy feat considering the party didn’t wrap up until sometime after 3:00am.

There are lots of stories about this day still to be shared. I’ll dig out some photos and get them posted this evening.

Unfinished business…

We accomplished a lot this weeked but still have more to do. The paint in the bedroom dried down to a really nice colour, and it really makes the room look great. I’m hoping to get home early today and paint the final bedroom wall; if I do, I’ll post some pics, or maybe a video tomorrow of the new space!

The Bathroom is Blue.

Blue BathroomReally. It is. We finished painting it today, and although the colour is quite a shock compared to the builders white, I think it’s going to work!

We painted three of the four walls in the bedroom – I did the rolling, Leah did the details – but it still took way longer than we thought it would. The fourth wall and the curtains will have to be completed tomorrow; I hope. It seems that there just isn’t enough time in a weekend to get all the things done that we need to do.

The painted walls have really changed the look of the room already, and I’m excited to see the finished product tomorrow!

How To Paint A Room

Normally when I make a reference using this line, it’s a reference to The Tragically Hip and the song “Thugs” which features the line “I’ll do the rolling, you do the details”. Today, however, it refers to what Leah and I are doing – painting our condo. We started with the bathroom – from builders white to a soft robins egg blue. Next up is the bedroom; although there’s more to do than just painting. We’re also putting up curtains… finally. Although I love the view out the window at night, I think that we are getting shortchanged on sleep as it never gets completely dark.
As I Look Outside My Window

So, today is the day that we’re making it happen. The first coat in the bathroom is done, Leah has prepped the bedroom for painting, and I’m ready to get back to it. I’ll post some pics when we’re finished.
