John Travolta Makes Me Want To Barf

Entertainment Tonight, or some such “news” program just aired a clip of an interview with Vinnie Barbarino aka Johnny Travolta and it made me uncomfortable. As with any actor I have a hard time believing anything that comes out of most of their mouths, but this is off the charts. Here’s the transcript:

Did you know Heath? How has his death affected you?
JT: I did know Heath and I adored him. I am pretty devastated over this. He was my favourite actor and my favourite talent. It’s like losing James Dean. I would give back all my awards and all my nominations just to have him back — I think he is a real loss as a persona and as a talent. And this whole evening is very hard for me. We are celebrating Australia week in the USA — and it’s killing me. You know that he’s both of us. He’s Australian and from the United States, and he means a whole lot. It’s bad situation.

How did you meet him?
JT: I wanted to meet him because I was very impressed with him from the very beginning. His agent introduced me to him at a party, and I just fell — I used every accolade. Actors need other actors to be inspired by, and he was “my” actor.

How did he respond?
JT: I forget that anyone younger than me grew up with me. He was beautiful in his reaction. I was an idol of his — my reacting that way to his work really blew him away, but he was very modest and almost bashful about the compliment — and didn’t want to make a big deal about himself. But he was a big deal.

WTF? Incoming Spy Satellite!!!!

From MSNBC:

WASHINGTON – A large U.S. spy satellite has lost power and propulsion and could hit the Earth in late February or March, government officials said Saturday.

The satellite, which no longer can be controlled, could contain hazardous materials, and it is unknown where on the planet it might come down, they said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the information is classified as secret.

“Appropriate government agencies are monitoring the situation,” said Gordon Johndroe, a spokesman for the National Security Council. “Numerous satellites over the years have come out of orbit and fallen harmlessly. We are looking at potential options to mitigate any possible damage this satellite may cause.”

The Betamax Doctrine & Last.fm

I’m a tech junkie and I love music. As a result I have some great computer equipment and make use of some amazing software such as Rogue Amoeba‘s Audio Hijack. It was with great interest that I read Paul Kafasis blog post on Last.fm’s streaming music catalog and the implications for recording tools like Audio Hijack Pro.

I worry that his fears may be realized sooner than later as the record labels are run by what seem like bunch of money grubbing monkeys stuck in the 1950s.

For those wondering about Last.fm’s streaming music catalog… well essentially you create a player based on your music preferences and it selects songs it thinks you will like and plays them – fully and completely – for you. You can embed the mini-player on your own website and have a personal radio station that only plays music you like!

First Impressions

“There are four ways, and only four ways, in which we have contactwith the world. We are evaluated and classified by these four contacts:
what we do, how we look, what we say, and how we say it.”

In an ongoing effort to grow our business we stepped up our cold-calling and cold-emailing and found this quote to be of particular interest. It acts as a guiding light in our efforts, and more attention should be paid to it by more people, more often.

Potential suppliers contact me all the time but rarely am I moved to actually follow-up on their request. What about you? Have you received a pitch-piece that absolutely rocked and caught your attention? If so, please share it with me.

1 (519) 645-7126

Lately we’ve been receiving a lot of long distance call. Most of them are from the number 1 (519) 645-7126. This is a TD Canada Trust telemarketing agency.

I’m tired of receiving these calls, and other calls so I did some digging and found that you can call TD at 1 (800) 818-3700 to get removed from their lists.

And if you really want to put an end to telemarketing calls and addressed junk mail you can have your name removed from the registry that the Canadian Marketing Association maintains:

By phone: (416) 391 2362 to get a long message telling you to visit their website www.the-cma.org which at the time of writing was not working.

Alternatively you can mail your request to:

PO Box 706
One Concord Gate
Toronto, ON
M3C 3N6

Or fax it to: (416) 441 4062

It takes about six weeks to take effect, and you need to register every three years.

Be sure to include your full mailing address, phone number and the complete first and last name of all people in your household that you want removed.

Pay Per Usage Internet Service From Time Warner

Time Warner Cable is starting a test program in Texas where customers pay tiered levels of service based on how much data they download per month, rather than the usual fixed-price packages with unlimited downloads.

Time Warner tries change to Internet rate system

NEW YORK (AP) — Time Warner Cable will experiment with a new pricing structure for high-speed Internet access later this year, charging customers based on how much data they download, a company spokesman said Wednesday.

The company, the second-largest cable provider in the United States, will start a trial in Beaumont, Texas, in which it will sell new Internet customers tiered levels of service based on how much data they download per month, rather than the usual fixed-price packages with unlimited downloads.

Company spokesman Alex Dudley said he did not know what the pricing tiers would be nor the download limits. He said the heavy users were likely using the network to download large amounts of video, most likely in high definition.

It was not clear when exactly the trial would begin, but Dudley said it would likely be around the second quarter. The tiered pricing would only affect new customers in Beaumont, not existing ones.

Time Warner Cable is a subsidiary of Time Warner Inc., the world’s largest media company.

———————–

I disagree with this idea and the apparent reasoning behind it; The real issue is that most internet service providers have oversold their network capabilities and capacities. End of story.

I agree that a minority of users use the majority of the service, but that’s a rule of thumb in business; 20% of your clients account for 80% of your business.

The accusation that they are targeting users who download terabytes per month is a farce unless these users have enterprise level connections and storage at their disposal. And if that’s the case, I can’t imagine why they would be included in this new pricing scheme.

For example:
1 terabyte = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes
Most people at home have a 3 or 5 megabit connection (megabit is different from megabyte).
3 megabit = 375 bytes per second
5 megabit = 625 bytes per second

A user with a 5 megabit connection would require 445 hours (18.5 days) of constant downloading at 100% of their maximum download rate to reach the 1 terabyte mark.

If only a small minority of users are using all the bandwidth their network does not have enough capacity. If every user used 100% of their monthly allowance the network would crash, and that’s what they are afraid of – especially with the launch of more and more online distribution channels like HD movies through iTunes. This will push more users to use more of their monthly transfer limit and they are likely to all use it at the same times – evenings and weekends.

FYI: Bell Sympatico only impose monthly limits if you have a contract. Users like me who are month-to-month are free of these limits.

Huh? Something about this doesn’t smell right!

“The Writers Guild of America, West (WGAW) announced today at a press conference that it will sign an interim agreement with the NAACP for The 39th NAACP Image Awards, which will take place on February 14, 2008, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.”

This is the same group that said no the the Golden Globes and the Grammys, and the Oscars? So why did they say yes to this one?Draw your own conclusions but how come we aren’t hearing screams of racism from the organizations they said no to?

I originally sided with the WGA but with each passing day they are losing me more and more. I’ve never been a fan of unions, but always think people deserve a fair deal however granting some requests and denying others is not fair – do unto others…
