John Derringer on Mats Sundin, and Why Derringer Is Wrong.

John Derringer, morning radio show host on Q107 here in Toronto, can’t understand why Mats Sundin would want to stay in Toronto. He keeps going on about how it shows that Mats doesn’t want to win; how if Mats went to another team he could win the Cup; how staying in Toronto says that he wants to lose; how Mats claiming that he disagrees with the rental player is a farce.

What Derringer fails to recognize is that when the Leafs brought in “rental players” Mats, as Captain, can’t come out and say that he doesn’t want these players. How well would those trades work out? If you were the rental player in question, and your new Captain said he didn’t want you on his team, would you be willing to give 100% trying to help him win? I don’t think so.

And proving that Mats wants to win, he kept his opinions to himself and welcomed the rental players to the team.

Derringer’s assumption that since Mats doesn’t want to go and help another team win the Cup is wrong. He discards the idea that Mats is a Maple Leaf and wants to win as a Maple Leaf.

Mats Sundin is not the reason the Leafs have not won the Cup, nor been contenders for most of the last 40 years. MLSE is. The teams that win are driven by ego; the ego of their owners. The Leafs are owned by an investment company whose goal is the make as much profit as possible. Sure a trip into the playoffs would generate additional revenue, but it would also increase costs as all players have loaded contracts that reward them for making it to the playoffs, and often for their performance in the playoffs.

What we need is a rich SOB to buy the Leafs and turn this organization around.

Sarah Silverman vs. Jimmy Kimmel

A few weeks ago Sarah Silverman posted this video:

And last night Jimmy posted his response:

Total Eclipse of the moon

If Mother Nature gives us a cloud-free evening tomorrow, we’ll be treated to full lunar eclipse.
The show gets under way at 8:43 p.m. and by By 10:01 p.m. the entire moon will resemble a Halloween pumpkin.

Normally only one area of the country is treated to favourable skywatching during an eclipse, but tomorrow all of Canada will be graced with front-row seats.

If you miss this show, then next one’s scheduled for 2010.

Kelsey’s Using Cheers Theme Song

WTF? I’m surprised that the rights holder to this song would allow a family restaurant/pub chain to use it. (In fact I’m surprised they would let anyone use it!) And frankly I’m a bit disappointed. Aside from a cash grab, what’s the point? It dilutes the brand – the Cheers brand – and in my opinion makes Kelsey’s seem cheesy.

And not in a good way.

There are lots of cheesy things from the 80′s & 90′s, that work well when resurrected for commercial purposes, but much like Miami Vice, this one should have been left alone.

The Making of a LEGO Brick

From BusinessWeek

Lego BricksAchieving near-perfection in these multicolored bricks is anything but child’s play By Joseph Pisani Let’s hear it for LEGO! Forty-eight years after they were introduced, LEGO toys are still much beloved by children and parents alike for their bright colors, durability, and the amount of imagination they inspire during play. Compared to the high-tech toys of today, LEGO bricks look exceedingly simple. But their precise production process is nothing to scoff at. Each LEGO brick must have that perfect grasp — strong enough to hold onto another brick but easy enough for a child to pull apart. The production of LEGO bricks is so accurate that only 18 out of 1 million LEGO elements produced is considered defective. It’s an astonishing number, considering that 15 billion LEGO components are made every year. We take a look at how classic LEGO bricks are made.
