Slumdog Millionaire

Last night Leah and I finally saw Slumdog Millionaire – and it’s worthy of the hype, praise and awards. It presents a world so foreign, yet so familiar, that I was instantly hooked. The story, and the way it is presented, is engaging and the characters are completely believable.

Leaving the theatre with a smile on my face I realized that I had just watched a film featuring child slavery, torture, murder, extreme poverty, and religious hate crime yet it left me feeling good. Can you name another movie that satisfies that criteria?

See it on the big screen as some of the scenes deserve it. The direction and editing may also lose a bit when translated to the small screens of home.

Why I Won’t Use “The Home Improvement People”

We’re regular listeners of CFRB radio. Their morning man, Bill Carroll, regularly endorses a home reno company called “The Home Improvement People“. We want to get some additional cabinets in our kitchen, and some built-in shelves in our living room, so we gave them a call.

The sent out an estimator, and a millworker, took measurements, and shared some ideas. A few days later I received an emailed quote detailing the costs.

As our house was still owned by the builder we decided to wait until the sale closed before making changes. The closing got pushed out until just before Christmas. Now that the house is ours, we’re ready to get the shelves and cabinets. As luck would have it, Bill Carroll advertised a sale that the Home Improvement People are running – “50% off all projects!”

Woo Hoo!!! Perfect timing for us. Check out this screen capture from a Google search for Bill Carroll: “50% off SALE! On every renovation. Our Lowest Prices Ever.”

Google results for Bill Carroll

Or so I thought.

On Monday I called Home Improvement People and asked them to update my estimate to reflect their sale. Today I got a call back informing me that the sale is only 50% off the labour. And it doesn’t apply to our project. The reason? The price we gave you is the price. End of story.

It disgusts me that CFRB would broadcast such misleading advertisements, and it alarms me that there are businesses out there carrying on business this way.

New Year’s Eve at The Devonshire Inn

On our return journeys from Kingston, Leah and I routinely detour through Prince Edward County. It’s by no means a short cut, but the scenery is nice, and the wine and hospitality are even better. We’ve commented that we’d like to go back for an overnight and stay at one of the numerous inns – so for New Year’s Eve we booked a room at the lovely Devonshire Inn On The Lake in Wellington. The Inn is situated right on the shore of Lake Ontario, flanked by a river and small waterfall.

It’s described as an Inn but it felt much more like a B&B. The relaxed atmosphere provided welcome relief from the harried pace of life in the city.

For dinner their chef prepared a four course meal, paired with wine. It was terrific from start to finish, and unlike many big city restos, they were in no hurry to shuffle us out the door so they could seat more guests. Just the way we like it.

Breakfast the following morning was also perfect – and the time nicely adjusted to a little later in the morning, letting the guests sleep in just a little more in consideration of the late night before…

We’ll definitely return to the Devonshire this summer, however I’ll have my bicycle with me. The roads in Prince Edward County, although a little rough, are too enticing not to ride.
